A Name that Saves

Music attribution: Canon in D Meets Joy by David Hicken from Portrait of a Pianist

“She will give birth to a son, and you are to give Him the name Jesus,

because He will save His people from their sins.”

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet:

“The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call Him

Immanuel” (which means “God with us”)

(Matthew 1:21-23).

Before He was ever born a name was prepared by God;

      a name of honor and authority . . . a name that saves.

The angel was God’s messenger, passing His names from heaven to earth—

      from the throne room of God to Joseph’s ear.

Yehoshuah—

      Yahweh saves.

Immanuel—

      God with us.

Not just one name . . . but two;

      Because not just one would do.

Selected by a Father who knew

      Who He is and all He would do.

His name befits His identity,

      All wrapped up in power . . . and grace.

At its very mention

      Comes peace, comfort . . . and strength.

It is a name above all names,

      For the God With Us who saves.

By what name do you know Him?

      I pray you know Him as Friend.
