Christmas in the Gospels - Day 1

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. (John 1:1-3 NIV)

The Word of God spoke, and light pierced the darkness, nothingness took form, chaotic waters were ordered, and all that there is was magnificently created.

The good news of the Gospel of John is that this Word is Jesus (John 1:14).

Many are the gifts wrapped up in this wonderful word! For they begin to unfold the grand revelation of the identity of Jesus. They, like light, pierce the darkness of our understanding. And, like laser, chisel the hardest of hearts.

Revealed to us in exquisite poetry, we learn that Jesus is that Word . . . and that Word is the one, same God from the beginning. Jesus, eternally God, the Son of God, and eternally with God, put on flesh. He is the greatest Gift the world has ever known—for the Gift of God is God.

Paul wrote a poetic word of his own: “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For everything was created by him, in heaven and on earth, the visible and the invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and by him all things hold together” (Colossians 1:15-17). The Word by which God created all things governs all creation. He is Creator and Lord of all.

The only One who has ever seen God, who truly knows God, came to make God known (John 1:18). He came to dwell among His creation. To reveal God’s glory. To do His Father’s will. And to gift His life to ransom mankind.

And His gift, spoken from the beginning, was Creation. God created humans and set them in the Garden to rule His gifted creation (Genesis 1:26, 28). A creation so good, so magnificent, so beautiful to behold—spoken into existence by His infinitely perfect and divinely majestic Word.

Glorious, Almighty God, we lift up a gift of praise for the Incarnate Word, Jesus Christ, who spoke and all of creation came to be. Who put on the flesh of Your own creation to make You known. May the divine light of Your revelation continue to open our eyes to see Your gracious gifts.
